Print workshop two.

Paragraph formatting options.

The blue marks show what formatting has been applied to the text.
Every time you press enter a blue character appears and every time you use the space bar a dot appears.
Every time you are working with text it's helpful to have these turned on.

You can take out the paragraph returns using this method and replace them with just one instead of two to format your text.

To format the text we also have this option that allows you to indent etc the whole of your text.
To use this tool you just have to click somewhere in the paragraph and the style will be applied.

To add space after a heading use this option and you can also type in any number for the space you would like.
To achieve drop caps you use this option and you are able to choose how many characters down this goes and also how many characters across it is applied to.

To gain a ruled heading you use these options to tailor exactly what you are looking for with your text.
Ruled headings can't be applied where there isn't a paragraph return so it would be applied to the whole paragraph. It also only applies to the first line of the paragraph and not the whole thing.

Options to keep text that you don't want to split between text frames or columns. Gets rid of widows/orphans too.

When you tab something across these arrows appear.

To add a tab use the tabs option and click on the white area of the ruler to place the tab, you can then move this around and also enter a numerical value.

If you type something in the leader field and then click back on the numerical value it will apply whatever you have type to the text area.
To remove the tab just click it on the ruler and drag it upward.

If you hold shift and press enter you can get a soft return so that you stay within the same paragraph but can move onto the next line.

This is how a paragraph style can be saved and applied across a range of text. You need to always press CMD for the shortcut and always use the numbers on the number pad at the right hand side of the keyboard.

Once you have set up a paragraph style it will appear in the pallet and can be applied anywhere in the text.

To create a hanging heading press CMD and \. It's also available in the type menu under insert special character.
